Sound quality ruined the evening
The first opening act, Mariachis el Bronx, have a very good energy. They played well and have an interesting concept. Unfortunately, the sound engineers were not delivering a quality product. The second opening act, DONOTS, were entertaining and covered a variety of material. Chris Peace were awful and mostly noise.
The band did put a lot of energy into their set, but they're not very good musicians. Nasty hard punk, very disappointing after driving up from Santa Cruz. What we heard was the boom of the bass guitar and bass drum, and everything was incredibly muddy. We were only able to pick out occasional lyrics, and all the songs ended up sounding fairly the same. The sound was so horrible for all three acts that we eventually left part way through Chris Peace.
Bottom line: the Fox in Oakland is BEAUTIFUL, but I cannot recommend seeing a show at this theater until the sound engineering is sorted out. Extremely loud is fine, and I think it was operating within the limits of the amplifiers and loudspeakers, but not within the limits of the room. We could barely understand what Dave King was saying between songs!
